Some Reasons People are Afraid to Try Pilates
Maybe you think you will look stupid, feel awkward and embarrassed or won’t be good at it. These are normal feelings whenever you try something completely new and out of your comfort zone. There are different learning curves for each individual and they are based on many factors.
This is why PILATES is so amazing! Pilates by design minimizes your anxiety by maximizing your potential based on your own body. A great Pilates Teacher is able to learn about your body, your experience level and any conditions you have in order to create routines/exercises specific to your needs and goals. Focus is one of the Pilates Principles important for getting the most bang for your buck out of your Pilates experience. While everyone is individually focused on their own body and movement it should allow you to move freely and not worry about what other people are thinking because everyone is focused on themselves. You also don’t have to be worry about being bad at it because you will always work within your own ability level, so you will always be good at it!
Small Group instruction is important, so look for a studio with small groups (3-5 people) in order to ensure your Teacher can work with you individually within a class. This will make sure that you don’t feel awkward and that you are always confident in every movement you are doing and practicing. Remember Pilates is a Practice and takes time and attention to perform correctly in order to reap the benefits and see/feel the results.
Unlike some other forms of exercise which push you towards some elusive goal Pilates is about building and maintaining a stronger body that allows you to do anything you want in life. Pilates can help you perform better athletically, functionally and with everyday tasks while knowing you are doing some of the safest forms of exercise available.
